RightWayUp
An open model that finds the right way up for any image, or recognises when there isn't one.

RightWayUp is an open image rotation model from ORTUS AI, the team behind CHEQIT. It estimates how far an image is rotated from upright across the full 360 degrees, at 1 degree resolution.
For each image it returns an angle, a confidence score and an abstain flag, which is raised when the image has no clear “up”. It can also write a corrected, upright copy of the image.
We built it for CHEQIT, to detect CCTV cameras that are rolled or upside down while still recording. We released it because it performed well on everyday photos too. It can check CCTV, dashcam and body-worn camera frames, straighten photo libraries and scans, and support document capture.
RightWayUp comes in six tiers, from Pico, which runs in a web browser, to Max, the most accurate. In a sealed holdout of 4,706 new photos, Max was within 10 degrees on 93.0% of images.
RightWayUp is free to use under Apache-2.0, including commercial use. Try the demo at cheqit.ortusai.io/resources/rightwayup/demo/, get the code at github.com/ortusaitech/rightwayup, or install it with pip install rightwayup.
